Lucy Burns, Founder & CEO of Cicadea Biotech

Creve Coeur Missouri, March 2021 –  Cicadea Biotech, located in the Helix Center Biotech Incubator, specializes in providing custom PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) testing strategies and services for gene and microbe detection.

“We turn the invisible into visible,” Lucy Burns, the Founder & CEO of Cicadea Biotech said. “We can help you find the invisible genes and microbes quickly and accurately.”

“Our lab is really focused on the applications of PCR technology,” Burns said. “We are especially interested in doing gene detection and pathogen detection. We know there is a great need for better tests.”

Potential applications of the customized PCR testing strategies offered by Cicadea Biotech include using PCR testing to improve human, animal, plant, or environmental health.

The existing problem that Cicadea Biotech helps solve is improving the speed and reliability of current laboratory testing, such as labs that utilize culture testing approaches. Typical microbial tests may take 2 to 10 days to get results. By utilizing PCR testing, a lab can have accurate results in a matter of hours.

For example, a PCR test can be used to detect Legionella, a pathogen causing Pneumonia disease, in a water source. A timely test could prevent a disease outbreak, protecting both environmental and human health.  Getting accurate and reliable results quickly can be important in dealing with any health matter, human or otherwise.

“I’m so glad there is a PCR test available for the Coronavirus,” Burns said. “You don’t want to take weeks to find out your results, right?”

Cicadea Biotech serves as a contract research organization for both corporate and government clients. They also produce products such as PCR-based microbial detection kits. Their services include custom PCR assays, high-throughput PCR testing, and high-throughput DNA extraction. Their unique high-throughput testing process allows clients to find genes and microbes quickly. They also hope to serve microbiological testing labs with their unique PCR test products.

“We have passion in detecting pathogens because there are a lot of blind spots,” Burns said. “Our PCR tests are sensitive, measurable, accurate, reliable and timely.”
