Using Light to Fight Covid-19

St. Louis, MO – August 13, 2020 - Commercial lighting specialists at Villa Lighting Supply are helping customers use Germicidal Ultra Violet (GUV) light in the fight to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).

“Our customers are trying to keep their facilities clean and safe for their customers and employees,” said Steve Barker, Villa Lighting Vice President. “Now we have a means to help them do that.”

Villa Lighting Supply is working with Cooper Lighting Solutions to offer Fail-Safe Disinfection Solutions, Germicidal UV enabled fixtures that can be used to disinfect surfaces, air, things and spaces.

“Cooper’s insistence that these be tested has slowed down the process a bit, but as of this week they are ready to go with everything” said Joe Thomason, a Cooper spokesperson. “People are very, very interested…almost to the point where we can’t keep up.”

While GUV lighting has been used successfully as a disinfectant in a variety of applications for more than three decades, it wasn’t until June that scientists at Boston University were able to independently validate the effectiveness of the light to inactivate the virus that causes Covid-19 in a detailed scientific study.

GUV light may be used to disinfect everything from shopping carts, retail spaces, restrooms, locker rooms, warehouses, classrooms, hospitals and other spaces.

While there are many potential applications of the technology, GUV poses a health hazard to humans if improperly used or installed. Lighting engineers at Villa Lighting Supply are working closely with Cooper to help customize solutions for a variety of uses for customers in a broad range of industries.

“There are so many places that this can be beneficial,” Villa Lighting Supply CEO John Villa said. “It is important that we get back to life as normal and hopefully this technology will help do that.”
